Taiwan ‘Confident’ in Strong Ties with the US Amid Trump, Xi Jinping, Talks 2025

As global attention focuses on the high-stakes meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung reaffirmed on Thursday that the island remains “confident” in its relationship with the United States — despite concerns that Taiwan could become a bargaining chip in U.S.–China diplomacy.

Taiwan’s Assurance of US Support

Speaking to reporters, Lin Chia-lung said he was not worried that President Trump would “abandon” Taiwan, emphasizing that the bond between Taipei and Washington remains strong and strategic.

China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has vowed to “reunify” the island — by force if necessary. This longstanding territorial ambition has raised tensions across the region, particularly amid recent geopolitical uncertainty.

Despite Washington’s formal adherence to the “One China” policy, which recognizes Beijing as the legitimate government of China, the United States maintains a robust unofficial relationship with Taiwan — including weapons sales and defense cooperation.

However, since taking office, Trump has yet to approve any new arms sales to Taiwan, a move that has sparked speculation about potential shifts in U.S. policy.

Trump and Xi Seek to “Put Out the Fire”

According to Frank Lavin, a former undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Trump–Xi summit is a critical opportunity to ease tensions between the two superpowers.

“Both leaders signaled with their opening statements that they want to take issues off the table and restore balance,” Lavin told the BBC’s Newsday.

He noted that Trump’s respectful tone toward Xi — praising his professionalism — suggests the U.S. leader is seeking to “signal goodwill” and perhaps dial down the intensity of past confrontations.

“Trump sort of lit the fire, and Xi responded in kind,” Lavin said. “Now both sides are sitting down to see if they can put out the fire they themselves started.”

As the world watches the outcome of the meeting, Taiwan remains cautiously optimistic — confident in its longstanding partnership with Washington, yet aware of the delicate balance between U.S. diplomacy and China’s assertive ambitions.
