Two additional suspects charged in Louvre jewel heist that shocked France

Two more suspects have been charged in last month’s daytime heist at the Louvre Museum, according to French authorities.

French officials cast the heist as an attack on the nation’s cultural heritage.

The pair are suspected to have used a furniture elevator attached to a truck to reach a second-floor balcony window that they smashed to enter the museum’s Apollo Gallery on Oct. 19, Beccuau said this week.

The heist has raised questions about the museum’s security, namely how the thieves were able to break into the world’s most visited museum in broad daylight without being detected.

Police were alerted to the crime as it unfolded by a member of the public who called emergency services, officials said.

Louvre’s director, Laurence des Cars, has demanded the creation of a police station at the museum. But Faure rejected that idea before Senate lawmakers Wednesday.

Faure said that using AI-powered video surveillance to detect possible heists would be more promising — but that even so, it may take until 2030 to fully modernize the Louvre’s surveillance systems. AI Icon
