Dharmendra — one of Indian cinema’s most beloved stars, admired for his effortless charm, rugged screen presence, and incredible versatility — passed away on Monday in Mumbai at the age of 89.

Although the cause of death was not immediately confirmed, local media reported that the legendary actor had been in and out of the hospital in recent weeks due to age-related health issues. His family has not yet released an official statement.
For nearly seven decades, Dharmendra entertained India and the world. Nicknamed “He-Man” for his strong persona and magnetic charisma, he appeared in more than 300 films, effortlessly switching between intense action roles, heartfelt romantic characters, and lighthearted comedic performances.
His early career in the 1960s began with romance dramas that won over female audiences, but he soon evolved into one of Bollywood’s most bankable action heroes. Over time, he also showcased impeccable comic timing, proving that he could excel in any genre.
A Legacy of Iconic Films
Dharmendra’s filmography is packed with classics, including:
- “Phool Aur Patthar” (1966) — where he played a tough yet tender-hearted criminal.
- “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” (1971) — a gripping story of a thief-turned-protector.
- “Chupke Chupke” (1975) — a beloved comedy where he played a professor pretending to be a driver.
- “Sholay” (1975) — the film that became a cultural phenomenon. In it, he portrayed the lovable, witty Veeru alongside Amitabh Bachchan’s Jai. The movie ran for over 25 weeks in more than 100 theaters, earning an iconic “silver jubilee” status.
Film historian Rajiv Vijayakar described Dharmendra best:
“There’s no role he cannot do. You cannot box him into a single category.”
The Man Behind the Hero
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8, 1935, in Punjab’s Sahnewal village, he grew up the son of a school headmaster. As a young boy, he was deeply moved by the film “Shaheed” (1948), which ignited his passion for acting.
He once said his biggest dream was simple:
“I just wanted to see my pictures everywhere — like my idols. I didn’t care about money. I only wanted one flat and one car.”
Before becoming an actor, Dharmendra worked as a mechanic. His life changed when he won a talent contest held by a film magazine, which eventually caught the attention of director Bimal Roy, who cast him in “Bandini” (1963) — the role that launched his stardom.
A Relatable Superstar
Though Dharmendra could master any role, one thing he always admitted he struggled with was dancing.
“I told directors I don’t understand dance,” he joked. “I just caught the rhythm and did my own thing — and those steps became famous!”
He continued acting well into the 2000s, impressing critics with his gritty performance in “Johnny Gaddaar” (2007). Over the years, he received several honors, including the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Beyond Films
Dharmendra built a successful business empire through brand endorsements and restaurant chains like Garam Dharam Dhaba and He-Man.
In 2004, he entered politics as a member of Parliament representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, he later expressed regret, saying politics did not suit him:
“I can’t play the game of scoundrels.”
Family and Later Life
Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur in 1954, and together they had four children, including Bollywood stars Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.
In 1980, he married actress-politician Hema Malini, with whom he had two daughters, including actress Esha Deol.
Despite suggestions, Dharmendra never wanted a memoir or biopic made about him.
“People forget films easily,” he once said. “They should remember you without needing a biography.”
His unforgettable performances, humble personality, and timeless screen charm ensure he will be remembered for generations to come.
