Although his family has not yet issued a statement, filmmaker Karan Johar confirmed the news on Monday, calling Dharmendra’s passing “the end of an era.” The actor had reportedly been in a Mumbai hospital earlier this month.

Johar wrote on Instagram, “Today there is a huge void in our industry. No one can replace him. He was incredibly handsome, the definition of a true hero, and will forever remain a legend of Indian cinema.”

Even India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, paid tribute. He described Dharmendra as “an iconic film personality” whose simplicity and warmth touched millions.

A Superstar Loved for His Charm, Versatility & Humility

Crowds filled the streets near a Mumbai crematorium as family members, including his wife Hema Malini and daughter Esha Deol, arrived for the funeral. Famous stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Siddharth Roy Kapur were also seen paying their respects.

Dharmendra was one of the original superstars of Indian cinema. Known for his rugged good looks, emotional depth, and effortless comedy, he starred in classics such as:

  • Phool Aur Patthar (1966)
  • Chupke Chupke (1975)
  • Sholay (1975)

These films made him a legend and won him millions of fans.

Actress Kajol remembered him as “the original good man”, while Ajay Devgn said Dharmendra’s generosity and presence had inspired generations. Farhan Akhtar called him irreplaceable, thanking him for six decades of entertainment.

A Journey From Punjab Village to Bollywood Royalty

Born on December 8, 1935, in Punjab, Dharmendra grew up with dreams of seeing his face on the big screen. He arrived in Mumbai in the 1950s and made his debut with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960).

His first major hit came with Shola Aur Shabnam (1961), and his success continued through the 1960s. Phool Aur Patthar (1966) made him a superstar.

The 1970s marked the peak of his stardom and also the beginning of his legendary onscreen partnership with Hema Malini, which later turned into marriage. Together, they worked in 31 films, including:

  • Sharafat (1970)
  • Dost (1974)
  • Sholay (1975) — considered one of the greatest films in Indian history.

Their romance was not without controversy, as Dharmendra was already married with four children at the time. But their chemistry remained one of Bollywood’s most beloved.

A Family of Stars

Dharmendra continued acting throughout his life, often appearing in films with his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol. Their film Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) even led to two sequels.

He also appeared in Tell Me O Khuda (2011), directed by Hema Malini and featuring their daughter Esha Deol.

His production company, Vijayta Films, created several successful movies, and he even served as a judge on India’s Got Talent.

Beyond Fame: A Man Loved by the People

Dharmendra briefly served as a Member of Parliament, though he later admitted politics was not for him. He preferred acting and often said he was driven by love, not fame.

In a 2016 interview, he said:
“I am a simple man. What keeps me going is the love of people, not success or money.”

With his passing, Bollywood loses not only a superstar but a gentle, humble soul who touched millions.
