Qualcomm Introduces the Standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 – A Cheaper, Less Powerful Version of the Elite Chip

Qualcomm has finally revealed the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a toned-down version of the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 that launched in November. This new chipset is designed to bring flagship features to smartphones at a more affordable price — but with a few performance cuts.

Performance: Good, But Not Elite

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is faster and more efficient than the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from 2023, offering:

  • 36% better CPU performance
  • 11% better GPU performance

However, when compared to the newer 8 Elite Gen 5, the difference becomes clear.

Slower Clock Speeds

The 8 Gen 5 keeps the same Oryon CPU structure as the Elite version, but the speeds are lower:

  • Prime cores: 3.8GHz (Elite has 4.6GHz)
  • Performance cores: 3.32GHz (Elite has 3.62GHz)

This means real-world performance will sit below both the 8 Elite Gen 5 and even last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Other Feature Differences

Compared to the Elite chip, the standard 8 Gen 5 comes with:

  • A slightly slower X80 5G modem
  • A mildly downgraded Adreno GPU
  • A less powerful Hexagon AI NPU
  • No support for the latest UFS 4.1 storage

Still, many features remain the same, including:

  • Display capabilities
  • Charging support
  • Most camera features
  • Bluetooth & Wi-Fi specs
  • Satellite and UWB support

So overall, the chip is still strong — just not as extreme as the Elite version.

Coming Soon to New Phones

Brands already confirmed to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 include:

  • Motorola
  • OnePlus
  • Vivo

The first phones will be released within weeks, and there’s a good chance the OnePlus 15R, launching in the US on December 17, will use this chipset.

Advice for Readers

If you’re planning to buy a new phone soon:

  • Choose a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 phone if you want smooth performance but don’t need top-tier speeds.
  • Go for the 8 Elite Gen 5 if you’re into heavy gaming, advanced photography, or long-term performance.
  • Always compare heat management, battery life, and real-world tests once the devices hit the market.
