Qualcomm Unveils Its Standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Chip — A Cheaper Alternative to the Elite Version

Qualcomm has finally introduced the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a follow-up to the premium Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset announced in November. This new version keeps most of the essential flagship features but comes with reduced performance to make high-end phones more affordable.

A Step Down in Power, But Still Strong

Qualcomm says the new 8 Gen 5 offers a good jump in performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from 2023:

  • 36% faster CPU
  • 11% faster GPU

But when compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the difference becomes more noticeable.

Lower CPU Speeds

While it uses the same Oryon CPU design as the Elite version, the speeds are slower:

  • Prime cores: 3.8GHz (Elite: 4.6GHz)
  • Performance cores: 3.32GHz (Elite: 3.62GHz)

This means the regular 8 Gen 5 won’t match the extreme performance of the Elite version, but it should still deliver smooth everyday usage.

Some Feature Downgrades

The standard 8 Gen 5 includes a few reductions:

  • Slightly slower X80 5G modem
  • Slightly weaker Adreno GPU
  • Reduced AI NPU power
  • No support for UFS 4.1 storage

However, many features remain the same:

  • Display support
  • Fast charging
  • Most camera abilities
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Satellite, and UWB support

So overall, it still brings a flagship experience—just at a lower cost.

Coming Soon in New Phones

Brands using this chip already include:

  • Motorola
  • OnePlus
  • Vivo

The first phones powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will launch in the coming weeks, possibly including the OnePlus 15R on December 17th.

Advice for Readers

If you’re considering a new phone:

  • Choose a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 device if you want premium features without the ultra-premium price.
  • Pick the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 only if you need the highest performance for gaming, pro photography, or heavy multitasking.
  • Wait for early reviews before buying — real-world tests give a clearer performance picture than numbers alone.
